Why this page exists

Search has decayed far enough that finding solid information about a topic is genuinely hard, and no amount of better algorithms seems to be fixing it. The alternative is human curation, the way directories worked before search took over.

The idea I took this page from came from a post by a user called lori, and the appeal is that it asks for almost nothing: if you have a personal site, put up a page of links to the things you care about. Link to other people’s link pages, and copy the good entries over into your own, so that no single site going down takes the information with it. Dead links are worth keeping too, as long as the Wayback Machine still has a copy of them.

That post is now itself only reachable through the Wayback Machine, which makes the argument rather better than I can. lori’s own list of resources lives at d-shoot.net.
